Tencent Admits Facebook’s Libra A Threat To WeChat Pay Facebook’s Libra stablecoin would be a serious threat to WeChat Pay, the payment service’s parent company Tencent admitted in a recent blockchain whitepaper. In the newly released whitepaper, Tencent illustrated the effectiveness of Libra’s expansion strategy: “It’s a safe play resorting to the strategy of ‘encircling the cities from the rural areas,’ in which Libra could quickly enter markets with underdeveloped financial infrastructure, especially those that do not have a credible local currency of their own before it sets its foot in developed markets.” Tencent notes that — if launched — there is no doubt that Libra will have a significant impact on the payments industry and finance in general.
Venezuelan President Approves Petro-To-Fiat Trades, Will Provide Stores With Crypto Pay Tech Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has authorized Petro-to-fiat trading and says his government will provide the necessary technology to all business holders in the country who want to start accepting crypto pay. Maduro also states that he will“surprise” Venezuelans “in the coming weeks” with new economic measures related to the digital economy and cryptocurrencies. Last week, he announced the government would begin handing out USD 3.6 million worth of Petro tokens to state authorities in bi-monthly handouts. The Petro is the Venezuelan state’s own, oil-backed cryptocurrency.
Ontario Regulator Lets Security Token Startup Test Secondary Trading The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is allowing a tokenization startup to facilitate secondary-market trading of its tokens by giving the firm regulatory relief for a short time. TokenGX, an affiliate of TokenFunder, has been given the green light to pilot the project to gather data on secondary-market trading, according to an OSC filing. The trading would help TokenFunder, a startup that helps other firms raise funds through token sales, provide liquidity for investors, the regulator said.
Belarusian Bank Was Approved To Service Crypto Investors According to Bitcoin.com, a bank in Belarus has effectively gotten the green light to process transfers related to digital assets. DFS, an affiliated company of Belveb Banking Holding’s member VEB Technologies, was recently registered as a resident of the High Technologies Park. The country’s special economic zone has already become home to many crypto businesses.

Elastos (TICKER: ELA) Assessment

Author's Note:
Elastos was discussed in this group twice, albeit 7 and 9 months ago, respectively. To do the project justice my intention is to give existing and new CryptoMoonShots group followers an update as the overall market has changed considerably and to factor in project-specific developments following the two mentions of Elastos here.

Definitions:
Content Creators and/or Developers: Individuals and enterprises that generate, design, and create digital assets.
Digital Capital: An individuals videos, photos, written text, written or spoken ideas, music, time, and attention
Big Tech: Companies like Alphabet, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Twitter to name a few.

Project Introduction:
The design philosophy of Elastos originated from Rong Chen, a former senior software engineer at Microsoft. Building on his experience at Microsoft, Chen wanted to create a platform in which applications and services are not allowed to access the Internet directly. Without access to the network, malware would not be able to steal user data or attack other services on the Internet. Chen’s vision was subsequently developed into an open-source, lightweight operating system for virtual machines (github.com/Elastos). In 2017, blockchain technology was integrated into Chen’s vision, enabling development of the Elastos Smart Web.

The project is focused on developing a decentralized internet platform where digital assets are owned, distributed, and monetized by Content Creators and/or Developers that own it. To understand this, it is imperative to understand the current internet model (Internet 2.0). Big tech currently owns the internet and everything in it: your videos, your photos, your written text, your ideas, your music, your time, your attention - and the most important in this context - the means of distribution - let's call this Digital Capital. In the current model, Content Creators and/or Developers are forced to distribute their capital through channels owned by Big Tech, which rob creators of their rights and profits.

Elastos is building the boundlessly scalable platform where digital capital can be published, distributed, and monetized by creators while allowing creators and developers to retain their rights. This platform will allow for decentralized applications (Dapps) to operate on a peer-to-peer network with no centralized control. Consumers can access these Dapps via their mobile phones without changing their operating system. The old Internet is a Web of information. If you click a URL, you get data. Elastos is creating a Web of apps. When you click a URL, you get code. The Elastos Web will be a special economic zone where Elastos tokens function as the base currency.

The project is open-source software whose development process has been sponsored by industry giants such as the Tsinghua Science Park, the TD-SCDMA Industrial Alliance and the Foxconn Group for more than 200 million RMB. The project has published more than ten million lines of source code, including four million lines of original source code. The Elastos blockchain utilizes merged mining with Bitcoin, the process by which consensus is reached on both chains simultaneously. In this case, the Bitcoin blockchain works as the parent blockchain to Elastos, with the Elastos chain as its auxiliary blockchain. The mining pools will deploy merged mining code and miners will submit proof of work to both blockchains at the same time. Energy consumption does not increase with merged mining, and will be equal to the energy consumed for mining either alone. Through this mechanism, the Elastos blockchain has an extremely strong guarantee of computing power and will then be able to provide blockchain innovations at a global scale. It makes full use of existing Bitcoin computing resources in addition to being environmentally friendly.

Live Products

Elastos SPV Wallet
Elastos provides an SPV Wallet SDK equipped with a series of wallet-related interfaces to enable users to develop unique wallets that connect to the Elastos blockchain. Sample applications are available now.
Elastos Blockchain Merged Mining
Elastos’ main public blockchain is merged mined with bitcoin, which enables pre-existing bitcoin miners to update their clients to simultaneously mine Elastos without expending excess energy. The merged mining is currently open only to the BTC.com mining pool.
Elastos DID Sidechain Service
Elastos provides a Decentralized ID (DID) Sidechain Service to be used in applications. On the Elastos ecosystem, every user, every device and every app has its own DID and can store any value that is associated with that ID on this sidechain. The DID service paves the way for a more secure and trustable internet, as this allows for seamless interoperability between DApps and IDs are assigned to users from the blockchain rather than having them assigned by a company.
Elastos TV Box
Although Elastos does not sell the TV Box directly, the Elastos Carrier is embedded inside. The Elastos TV Box is presently used for simple features such as remote control in a decentralized peer to peer fashion. In the future, these TV Boxes and many other IoT devices that have Elastos Carrier installed will be capable of running as IPFS nodes for supporting the distributed file storage network for the Elastos ecosystem.
Elastos Dittobox
Any individual can establish a unique dittobox server on a personal computer that integrates ownCloud server and Elastos Carrier. The dittobox server can be installed onto a computer behind the router, and all files stored on the server are accessible from anywhere in the world via the Elastos Carrier network.

Beta Products
Elastos Blockchain PoW + DPoS
Elastos main blockchain will employ a hybrid consensus of PoW + DPoS where the PoW is merged mined with bitcoin and both are used to package blocks while the DPoS nodes are used for signing. This creates a finality in the blocks which will prevent the chain from forking.
Elastos Token Sidechain Service
Elastos DApps utilize this service to generate application-specific native tokens within the Elastos ecosystem. As such, each application can create its own token on demand, and without friction.
Elastos Smart Contract Sidechain Service
Elastos provides a unique sidechain service that is designated to running and executing smart contracts. These smart contracts are compatible with ERC20 and ERC721 tokens, which enables Ethereum DApps to run smoothly within the Elastos ecosystem.
Elastos Hive
Elastos will provide a distributed storage system that apps can utilize to store files, messages in a p2p chat, videos, music, and more.
Elastos Elapay
Elapay is a payment tool that enables payment with ELA. Two types of payments will be supported. The first is “Pay On Order,” which encompasses standard commercial purchases, and will require merchants to integrate Elapay service into their web apps in order to offer users this payment option alongside the likes of credit card and cash payments. The second is “Point to Point Pay,” which involves individuals exchanging funds between themselves. “Point to Point Pay” uses an html5 page that can be shared on social media outlets such as Facebook or Wechat to send or receive ELA. Elapay can be expended for a variety of purposes – from purchasing a virtual asset in an online video game to standard online shopping expenditures. It simply represents another method of paying for goods and services at checkout.

Alpha Products
Elastos Trinity
A cross-platform browser application that runs on Android and will be available for iOS in the future. This is a form of the Elastos virtual machine and a demo of Elastos Runtime where decentralized applications written for Elastos run in a secure sandboxed environment. These are Ionic framework applications. Also, the SPV wallet functionality and the payment functions will be embedded inside the browser so that other DApps that run on Trinity can easily integrate with the available features.
Elastos Carrier SDK
Elastos Carrier provides SDK for Android (Java), iOS (Swift/Objective C), and nodeJS that can be utilized to connect to the decentralized peer to peer network that takes over all of the network traffic on the Elastos ecosystem, such as messaging, file transfer, and more.

On January 16, 2019 the Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing (IGRS) board issued Elastos a formal membership certificate, thus making official its entrance into the IGRS Industry Association. In conjunction with Association members, Elastos will explore the opportunities and potential synergies presented by blockchain and IoT, in the joint hopes of creating a robust IoT industry ecosystem.

Recently an ecosystem partner meetup revealed 900k TV Boxes sold and 180k registered DIDs via our partner app Viewchain. The Elephant Wallet also hit the Apple App Store and Google Play.

In June, 2018 Elastos partnered with ioeX, an internet of things platform that was much anticipated. The ioeX project is a behemoth on its own and is built on the Elastos platform.

**There are countless other exciting milestones that were achieved in 2018 and planned for 2019. Refer to https://news.elastos.org/.*\*

Market Sizing, Factors, and ELA's Potential
In the current market, Elastos' market cap of fluctuates between $31 million and $35 million with ~14,574,261 ELA coins in circulation ($2.1 to $2.3 per ELA) and total coin supply of 34,104,561.

ELA is currently listed on LBANK, CoinEgg, Huobi, HBUS, Kucoin, BCEX, and BIT-Z, the majority of which are low volume exchanges.

Binance Exchange controversy: Although various sources say different things, the evidence points to one plausible story: The Elastos foundation refused to pay Binance's listing fee and backed out of the listing the coin. Binance followed suit by tarnishing the project reputation using various media.

Based on the projects scope, the team's background and leadership, the project's backers, affiliations, and partnerships, and projects with similar mandates the project has the potential to be worth close to $500 million (15x) in the short term (less than 12 months) and several billion over the longer term (1 to 2 years).

The largest barrier to achieving it's objectives is adoption by developers. The chicken or the egg dilemma is that some argue listing ELA on major exchanges will incentivize developers to build on the platform because the coins value will appreciate others ague that the underlying technology must far outperform the incumbent to incentivize migration and hence drive the coins value. It's probably a combination of the two.

I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this assessment.

Thanks!

State of the Libertarian Movement

I think it is time we provided an update on where we are as a movement.
I will break this down into pieces. Additionally, I will include my own observations and suggestions:
Seasteading
Seasteading is progressing faster than any other direct action undertaken by this movement. Anenome5 has established a company called Ventive Floathouse. This company endeavors to establish the first seastead in Richardson Bay, off the coast of California. It will be a visa haven, appealing to those attempting to bypass America's ornery visa requirements. In the following years after this island has been established, Ventive Floathouse will attempt to build the first seastead in international waters, which will be explicitly anarcho-capitalist. They are currently $450k away from funding the first seastead in Richardson Bay. They are currently testing the design of the island and will not begin accepting funding until testing has been completed. If you or anyone you know would be interested in investing in this project, contact Anenome5 through the website link provided above.
The Seasteading Institute has achieved a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Polynesian government. This Memorandum has been criticized by some within the FP government and the FP public, as seen in this article. Regardless, it appears that the project is moving forward. The plan is to create 12 artificial islands within 1 mile of the FP coastline, funded by investors and an ICO. The project is projected to be completed by 2020, however only time will tell if the Institute will meet that deadline.
In other news, a corporation has officially began marketing artificial islands for the price of 300 million dollars, see here. Their target consumers are the ultra-rich. This suggests that, in the coming decades, seasteading will become an increasingly viable alternative to buying an island.
Suggestions: Support Ventive Floathouse in any way you can. Be the change you want to see. This may be our best shot at establishing an anarcho-capitalist society within the next two decades.
Libertarian Party of the United States of America
In the Presidential Election of 2016, the LPUSA achieved 3.2 percent of the popular vote, a total of 4,042,291 voters. This is a significant improvement over the 2012 election, in which roughly 1 million people voted for the LPUSA. The real challenge will be repeating this success in the next election. Gary Johnson has announced that he will not be running for president in 2020.
The LPUSA has announced its intention to get 2,000 candidates on the ballot for the 2018 elections. Whether or not this will occur remains to be seen.
Despite achieving 3.2 percent of the popular vote, the LPUSA is still struggling to acquire permanent ballot access in all 50 states. The LPUSA currently has ballot access in a majority of states.
In the aftermath of the 2016 National Convention, the LPUSA has been experiencing somewhat of an identity crisis. A fat individual in a speedo danced on stage while the event was broadcast live on CSPAN, significantly tarnishing the reputation of the party. Anarcho-capitalists were widely blamed by moderate libertarians for this incident, despite our outright condemnation of said incident. Libertarians are in the process of deciding whether the party should be radical or moderate in its message and platform. The majority of libertarians wish to see the LPUSA become more moderate, and to abandon such phrases as "Taxation is Theft". There is even a socialist caucus within the Libertarian Party.
In an attempt to preserve the radical libertarian and anarcho-capitalist elements within the LPUSA, the Mises Caucus has been established. Together with the Radical Caucus, these organizations seek to promote radical libertarianism and to elect party officials and political candidates who will represent them.
The Libertarian National Committee is comprised of 8 representatives from 8 regions. Region 1, based in Colorado, is represented by an anarcho-capitalist named Caryn Ann Harlos. I do not know if any of the other committee members are anarcho-capitalists.
in 2014, the former chairman of the Libertarian Party Geoff Neale made history when he was appointed to establish the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties. This is the first attempt by the libertarian parties of the world to coordinate internationally.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek a moderate platform while maintaining a radical message. Efforts should be made to appeal to a majority of voters while raising the libertarian consciousness of the population to the highest degree possible. Libertarians should focus primarily on running in state and local elections in an attempt to maximize our influence on the American population.
The Free State Project
Thousands of libertarians have moved to New Hampshire in an attempt to influence the politics of the state towards a more libertarian direction. Libertarians have run as republicans and democrats and been successfully elected to office. Statist laws have been repealed and more libertarian laws have been enacted, such as protections for Bitcoin sellers.
Suggestions: Libertarians should move to New Hampshire in greater numbers and run for positions in the local and state governments. Organizations should be established to carry out activism, namely:
And more. Which brings me to my next topic:
Activism
Libertarians, especially outside of NH, have engaged in very little activism. This is due to both a lack of organization and a lack of ideas. Meanwhile, non-libertarians have been engaging in activism that might interest radical libertarians. An example of this are the intermittent property tax protests that have swept across parts of rural America.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek to emulate the Chicago Tax Strike of 1977. Libertarian organizations should hold town hall meetings about issues that concern the public, such as high property taxes, and attempt to radicalize the public toward direct action, such as a protest or tax strike. Once direct action is underway, libertarians should seek to raise the libertarian consciousness of the disgruntled masses. For example, if people are protesting high property taxes, you can attempt to turn their attention (and anger) to the recipients of those taxes, such as the education system. Instead of being angry about just property taxes, you can make them angry at the public schools who receive it (and waste the money). In this manner, you will raise the libertarian consciousness of the protesters. We must always seek to radicalize and raise the libertarian consciousness of the American people.
Which brings me to a classic example of what we are trying to achieve:
Free Brazil Movement
A few years ago, the Atlas Network and a coalition of charitable organizations provided millions of dollars in funding and a number of activist leaders to think tanks in Brazil. The provision of funding and leaders culminated in the establishment of the Free Brazil Movement, led by Kim Kataguiri. With the support of the Atlas Network and affiliated think tanks, they were able to mobilize many tens of thousands of Brazilian citizens to take to the streets and protest against the socialist government.
The Free Brazil Movement organized the demonstrations of 15 March and 12 April in 2015 against the social governmental establishment of Dilma Rousseff and the Workers' Party, and was instrumental in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. See article and video here.
In the aftermath of the uprising, thousands of Brazilians have converted to libertarianism. Some of them are English speakers who frequent this subreddit's Discord Server.
Suggestions: Do everything within your power to support the blossoming libertarian movement in Brazil. Learn Portuguese, translate literature to Portuguese, print flyers and posters in their language, and donate to libertarian institutions in Brazil. Libertarianism is now an international movement, and it is time we acted like one. Emulate their success in raising the libertarian consciousness of the masses, to such a degree that thousands of libertarians were born. And above all, let us work together. Americans and Brazilians, hand in hand!
Students for Liberty
SFL has evolved into a decentralized international organization, with chapters ranging from America to Brazil to Europe and Asia. Gone are the days when SFL was a small organization; it is now a massive organization with thousands of members across the world. SFL represents the spearhead of the libertarian student movement, providing a presence on college campuses and aiding in the recruitment of new libertarians.
Suggestions: We must do everything in our power to build the libertarian student movement. If you are on college campus, it is in your best interest to organize with other libertarians and engage in whatever activism and propaganda dissemination you can. We must build a Student Libertarian Action Movement (SLAM) on every college campus that we can.
Free Society Foundation
Roger Ver and a group of wealthy individuals have raised 100 million dollars in an attempt to purchase sovereignty from a host nation. While the odds of this succeeding are slim, this amounts to the largest holding of capital ever accumulated by a group of anarcho-capitalists. This money could easily be spent on seasteading, activism, advertising, and more.
Suggestions: Let this serve as an example for others to follow. When we pool our money together and raise capital, we can accomplish great things.
Crypto-Anarchism and Crypto-currencies
Bitcoin has come a long way in the last few years. The price has soared and it is beginning to see widespread adoption. It has also given birth to a multitude of new crypto-currencies, such as BCH, Litecoin, Monero, Ethereum, Ripple, etc. Gone are the days when bitcoin was a secret treasure of libertarians. It has now been co-opted by the average joe, for better or worse. Some libertarians argue that this transition, combined with increasing state regulations on crypto-currency, has challenged Bitcoin’s revolutionary nature. But with new currencies like Monero offering the promise of anonymity, many libertarians believe the full revolutionary potential of crypto-currencies has yet to be realized.
The NSA revelations of recent years have resulted in the popularization of crypto-graphic tools, such as Signal, TOR, I2P, etc. Mass surveillance has provoked a widespread counter-surveillance movement.
The Silk Road is long gone, but on the horizon is a new innovation- the Open Bazaar. Decentralized, reputation-based, and incorporating the use of 3rd party arbitration, the combination of software like Open Bazaar with anonymizing tools will facilitate the establishment of an anarcho-capitalist marketplace on the internet.
In the last few years, we have seen the innovation of new ways of engaging in market activities and contractual arrangements, from smart contracts to multi-sig. With these developments destined to advance, the future of crypto-anarchism looks promising.
Suggestions: Spread the word about Open Bazaar and cryptographic tools. Warn others about the NSA in the hopes that it will entice others to begin using such tools. Help to develop the latest in cryptographic tools and protocols so that we may ore effectively establish radical libertarianism on the internet.
Agorism and Crypto-Agorism
Despite a large number of libertarians claiming to be Agorists, very few libertarians abide by the founding document of Agorism, the New Libertarian Manifesto. Most libertarians do not engage in Agorist praxis beyond holding cryptocurrency and retreating to rural homesteads to live in isolation. The strategy of Agorism traditionally requires organization on the part of New Libertarians. Instead, libertarians seem to have adopted a new strategy, referred to as Crypto-Agorism. Crypto-Agorism is a merger of the strategy of Agorism with Crypto-Anarchism. In other words, it is the attempt to realize Agorism on the internet, through the use of tools such as Monero and the Open Bazaar. While Crypto-Agorism blossoms, traditional Agorism appears to be stagnating.
Suggestions: Crypto-Agorism should continue to be pursued. However, libertarians must organize into chapters of the New Libertarian Alliance, participate in counter-economics (beyond the use of cryptographic tools and currencies) and build alternative institutions if we are to truly develop the counter-economy beyond the confines of the internet.
Conclusion
There is more than I could write about, but I will stop there. The next decade will be a turning point for the libertarian movement. Are we prepared to organize, raise capital, build alternative institutions, and ultimately construct a free society? Only time will tell.

Exclusive interview with Matjaz Skorjanc from slovenian media

Source: http://www.delo.si/gospodarstvo/podjetja/ekskluzivno-matjaz-skorjanc-nicehash-o-kraji-bitcoinov.html
Google translate: Ljubljana - During the pressing under the glass roof of the entrance to one of the buildings of the Technology Park, we tried with the third ring. Finally, the answer was: "Come after you." Nicehas has been a state of emergency for several days. Waiting continued in the office space, when after a few minutes Matjaž Škorjanc finally entered, he is also known in the media with the hacker nickname Isdero. The man who was caught in Orihovo by agents of the FBI Federal Bureau of Investigation, a man who spent the first 20 months in prison without a telephone, a computer, and his family could communicate only through a glass barrier. The man, who is supposed to be able to crash the US economy with a single call at the age of 22.
In his story, his thoughts quickly escaped Kevin Mitnick, the legendary American hacker from the beginning of the Internet, who spent his prison days in isolation, disconnected from the outside world, as he could use a whistle to wage a nuclear war. A stereotypical notion of prisoners was dispersed with a handshake and the first word exchange.
Škorjanc now wants to write a new story. "I barely picked up, and I'm back on the floor," he said desperately. About 4700 bitcoins were stolen, now worth over 70 million dollars. "This must never be repeated again. We will do everything that will never happen again, "said Škorjanc. "Someone probably tried to suppress us in the pot, but hackers with such knowledge are not in Slovenia."
He did not run away from the questions of his past by moving and at times emotionally. Many of her karmic elements have also been seen in this greatest theft so far. His code used to make invasions into information systems and personal computers. "I am not a man who wants to harm anyone. What happened in the 'previous' times could be attributed to my naivety. At the age of 22, I was not aware of the consequences that my actions might have. "He had to go to jail for them, but he still says:" I was never a hacker. I'm a programmer. "
The last days were probably hard for you. Stand in the middle of a storm of one of the greatest intrusions in the history of bitcoin. How do you feel?
It's extremely difficult. I feel as if they kidnapped my child and cut her in front of my eyes. I'm not sleeping, in the last few days I've closed my eyes for a few hours. I invest all my power to save the platform of nicehash, which enables the survival of more than 700,000 miners and their families. Through us, we earned over one billion and a half dollars (calculated at the price of bitcoins today) in the past year. A few million people from around the world are financially dependent on Nicehasha. Especially those in a less developed world where earned funds replace wages, people use them for schooling, while in the winter months they use their computer systems for heating. The attack is a very big blow for me, for Nicehash and for the entire crypto industry.
Talk about the fact that this is a personal blow to you, but you are not affiliated with the company. You are also not the CEO of Nicehash, which was founded in the summer. Is your father a martyr for your prison sentence?
We know what the laws are, why we have such, I do not understand; in my opinion, this is a limitation of human rights. My father and my whole family stood side by side all the time, without them I would be hard to pick up. I still claim that I was wronged. But I picked up, I gathered power, and Nicehash is my child, my life work. Without him, without it, it would not have been possible. Now he is a co-owner of Nicehash. Nicehash is a relatively young company; you used to do business through Bitorious and H-BIT?
The nicehash platform has been in existence for more than three years. A few months ago, we set up a new company, because it is easier than doing business with two companies. How many bitcoins or money did you pay out to your "miners" during the years of operations on the market? According to today's value of bitcoin, this would be more than one billion and a half dollars (over 120,000 bitcoins op. P.). There would be more to come in this year. Nicehash has become a way of life for many, providing them with survival, service and a significant role in the new emerging world of blockchain technologies. Miners are the blockchain pillar. Since we are a completely free market for the purchase and sale of computational power for the mining of crypts, we were certainly many in the heel.
Hacking and hackers? When we watch movies, everything looks very simple. How do these things actually take place in the real world? What methods are hackers using now?
I've never been a hacker, it's a big misunderstanding. I'm just a programmer. I've never busted in anywhere or stole anything at all. I was told that I wrote a software that was used by others for evil purposes. In spite of everything that is attributed to me, I do not have the experience of hacking, and I can not answer this question with you.
When you have served a penalty for an act in the past, have you decided to set up a nicehash platform that serves miners? How's that going?
I am a programmer and I realize that things need to be user-friendly. Three years ago, when I started putting up the nicehash platform, I had that in my mind. Nicehash is like Uber for taxi drivers - it brings together those who miners and those who buy computing power in one place. We do not trade with the currencies of Fiat (traditional money, op. P.). All transactions take place in bitcoins. When I installed the platform, I had in mind users who were not programmers and would like to earn extra money at the expense of mining. The number of users who used our platform was evidence of this. Our service was provided to everyone, including those who were without computer knowledge, because we simplified the whole process. How does a hacker look to become a victim of a hacker attack? What's behind your background in the attack?
I hardly comment because I do not feel like a hacker. The reasons for the attack can be several, but I can not speak of them right now. You have to understand that this is one of the largest and most sophisticated hacker attacks in the crypt of all times, so all the major global organizations fighting the cybercrime were involved in the investigation. This is not about revenge.
Users are angry because your bitcoins have not been stored on physical media or in a "cold wallet" if you are expressing it in a firebreak. Why did you have all the resources in the system, online?
Our system is flowing. We are not a stock exchange. With us, users buy computing power with bitcoins and miners pay bitcoins for their work. But it is true that during this time the demand for bitcoins has increased sharply, the price of transactions has increased, and we have had to change certain rules. The value of bitcoins has also increased. I could say that exceptional growth has overtaken us on the whole line. As a result, new security challenges are emerging, with which we have successfully tackled successfully.
How do you respond to the claims of some who are spreading speculation through social networks that it was an attack from within?
We can not exclude this option until the search is complete. According to what we know today, the probability of this is very small. For the attack, there is an extremely well-trained group of attackers, which in my opinion is not in Slovenia. What will you do in the next days and what have you done so far to get information about hackers who have managed to empty your wallet?
Unfortunately, I can not speak of this.
What is the possibility that the law enforcement agencies will find the culprits?
Small. But you have to understand that there were no 70 million of them, but there is probably no financial interest in the background. The goal of the attack was to destroy the nicehash, which is the largest and completely free market for calculating power for mining. It's already a multi-billion-dollar business that is steadily rising, from month to month. Somebody probably tried to suppress us in the pot.
What was your income in the last few months when demand was growing? This moment I would not like to talk about these numbers.
Peter Trček estimated that there is a possibility of negotiating with hackers? Have you investigated this option, are you hoping for a possible buy-in with a discount?
Only in movies.
Are cryptos secure? Are risks systemic or depend primarily on the security measures of individual companies?
The cryptos are safe. The main risk is lack of knowledge. The systems that exist are not user-friendly, and there are too many unknowns that are missing users. Despite the fact that we had the protection of "state of the art", it was obviously still too little, since we must bear in mind that in "social engineering" there is still a man in the middle. When establishing a new platform, we will create a security system according to military standards, which means that we will exclude the human factor from the equation.
Do we need special departments to deal with cryptocrinals? Would you be willing to cooperate with law enforcement authorities in such cases?
Of course. Blockchain technology is a general historical opportunity for a more democratic, free and new world. But security is critical. I am thinking of fighting this with all my strength and giving my contribution to society.

The Daily: Complicated Crypto Purchasing Puts Off US Investors, Analysis Confirms — ICOs Spike

The Daily: Complicated Crypto Purchasing Puts Off US Investors, Analysis Confirms — ICOs Spike

Purchasing Process Deemed a Hurdle for New Crypto Investors
The complicated process of purchasing cryptocurrencies is the biggest obstacle for new investors entering the crypto space, according to a recently released study. The authors polled 1,000 US residents to profile crypto holders and better understand how they are using their digital coins. The poll also attempted to gauge the cultural perceptions surrounding cryptocurrency ownership.
According to the compiled data, almost 40 percent of millennials have confirmed owning cryptocurrency, 48 percent of males and 26 percent among females. At the same time, 24 percent of polled Generation X Americans and 15 percent of Baby Boomers also admitted owning bitcoin or any of its alternatives.
The survey, conducted by Creditcoin, made other interesting findings regarding a possible connection between cryptocurrencies and personal relationships. Three-quarters of the questioned stated they would be more likely to date someone who is knowledgeable about cryptocurrency. Many of them, however, remain reserved about dating someone who is obsessed with cryptos. The majority said they would date a divorced person rather than someone who keeps all their savings in cryptocurrency.
Nevertheless, over half of the respondents believe they would have about 10 percent of their savings in cryptocurrency in the next decade. When asked what they would do if given $10,000, almost 40 percent said they would buy cryptocurrency than invest in a down payment on a house, 33 percent, or a car — 28 percent.

Investors Still Bullish on ICOs, Despite Issues

Despite regulatory pressures and other issues like bad publicity due to fraudulent or unsuccessful projects, Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) have raised $11.8 billion through May 2018, according to a new analysis released by The Wall Street Journal. The estimate covers nearly 900 token sales listed on ICObench.com. The authors point out that this year’s total is more than double the amount collected by coin offerings for the whole 2017, ~$5.5 billion.
The researchers claim that the problems around ICOs have not deterred big tech-oriented investors. Some of the notable token sales this year include the coin offering conducted by the company operating the popular messaging service Telegram, which raised $1.7 billion USD,
and that of Block.one, which attracted an estimated $4 billion for its EOS network in June.
The study found that the number of ICOs has increased as well, with around 490 token sales raising an average of $24 million in the first five months of 2018, compared to $14 million collected on average by 300 startups in the last five months of 2017.
According to another report, authored by the Swiss Crypto Valley Association (CVA) and PwC’s consulting division, Strategy&, the capital raised through ICOs has reached $13.7 billion USD in the first five months of this year. Both studies conclude that the US remains a major destination for initial coin offerings, while countries like Switzerland are catching up.

Zug Concludes ‘Successful’ Test Blockchain Vote

Authorities in the city of Zug, home of the Swiss Crypto Valley, announced that the country’s first experimental municipal blockchain-based vote has been conducted successfully. The trial started on June 25 and was completed on July 2. Voters were able to participate via an app they had to download and install on their mobile devices. The small scale consultative vote also utilized the city’s eID system introduced in November.
The residents of Zug were asked if they were in favor of setting alight fireworks during the annual Lakeside Festival, and whether they thought digital IDs should be used to borrow books, pay parking fees, and for identification on regular referendums. The city has been issuing its residents with digital identity documents since the winter, and is currently examining various possible applications for the blockchain technology.
What sets the Zug referendum apart is that the voting did not take place via a single central server, but was distributed using blockchain across many computers, Swissinfo reports. “The premiere was a success”, Dieter Müller, Head of Communications for the city, told the Swiss News Agency. He added that the technical details of the test will be evaluated over the coming months to estimate the level of protection of privacy and voting secrecy. Authorities will also focus on ensuring that voting results are verifiable and immutable.

Israeli Startup Launches Vegancoin

While establishing a chain of vegan restaurants in the US, American entrepreneur Isaac Thomas and his Israeli partners, Nati Giat, Shenor Shapira, and Yossi Raybi, realized that the millions of vegans and vegetarians around the world need more than that. Their Tel Aviv based company, Vegannation, is now building a global vegan-friendly decentralized community platform.
The idea behind the project is to create an ecosystem where vegans can find food products, other vegan commerce and share content like recipes, news and blogs in one place, The Jerusalem Post reports. The platform will have its own crypto, Vegancoin, and joining members will be provided with a Vegannation digital wallet. According to the entrepreneurs, all affiliated businesses are “vegan and cruelty-free.”
“We are moving toward a world where people can see everything and can be responsible for the way they consume. So bringing cryptocurrency to the vegan community brings it full circle,” said Vegannation CEO and co-founder Isaac Thomas. In his words, veganism, cryptocurrency and blockchain go hand in hand toward a world of transparency and awareness.

Bitcoin as a tool; A Decentralized and Global Stock Exchange

I posted a link to my yours.org the other day, but due to that sites activity being far less than this site, I've decided to upload my posts here for at least a little while, and will continue to post updates here if people find them interesting. As my previous post stated, all input, positive and of course negative is more than welcome.

Coloured Coins; the Basics: https://np.reddit.com/btc/comments/7ne47b/coloured_coins_the_basics_non_technical/

This post is an extension of my "Coloured Coins; the basics" where I touched on the concept of coloured coins and how it relates to Bitcoin (cash), the blockchain and the decentralizing movement we are currently seeing develop within finance and economics in the form of electronic peer-to-peer payment systems. I will be expanding upon the idea of a decentralized and global equities exchange that can be made possible by the use of coloured tokens on Bitcoin.

A lot of people within this cryptocurrency space found themselves here, not through an interest in finance or economics, but instead through computer science and programming, or even just an interest in gambling or playing with new and interesting tech. For those of you who know nothing of finance and economics and who have never bought or sold a stock in a company, I will briefly explain what equity investing is and then how coloured coins can change the current methods used today. Typical methods of investing see an individual buy a small portion of a company that they believe will yield positive profits into the future. By purchasing 0.1% of the company, they entitle themselves to 0.1% of that companies profits, paid out in the form of a dividend. These holdings are called stocks, and they are bought and sold through the use of stock exchanges typically contained within a country (currently, there is no global stock exchange). If you've ever heard someone say; "You can't invest in Bitcoin, you can only hold and speculate on its price.", they are following the belief, that because you are not purchasing equity in a system designed to return a profit, you are not investing in the traditional sense.

To purchase Bitcoin is not the same as an equity investment in a company that yeilds profits for shareholders; paid out in the form of a dividend. Bitcoin is a tool, not a system of value creation. It can be seen as an investment and perhaps its primary use right now is just that; a speculative investment, but I believe when we pass this initial adoption phase, and the tool starts to shine in the ways its truly meant to, thats when things get fun.

Bitcoin as a tool; A decentralized and global stock exchange

My previous post touched on this idea of a blockchain based, Decentralised Stock Exchange (DSE), built on top of the Bitcoin (cash) protocol. This is not my original idea, and I am definitely not the first person to expand upon it, I do however have a passion for finance, and felt this idea deserved a post of its own due to the nature and magnitude that this could change the current global equities markets. I've talked about how coloured coins open doors to making a DSE possible, the point of this post is to explore it in more depth, talking about what it could look like, and why I (and many others I assume) would want it to exist.

Before we talk about the how and why of this DSE, lets briefly cover how stocks have been traded in the past and how the trading is currently handled.
Before the introduction and wide spread use of the internet, stock trading was typically handled by a person known as a broker. For the average person to purchase a stock, they would seek the services and usually advice of a broker on which stocks they should buy. This service came with a hefty fee that made investing more niche that it is today. If you were looking to invest $1000 into the market, but you didn't know how or what to purchase, you would enlist the help of a broker. This consultation could very easily take an hour or more and cost around $100. A typical healthy yearly return for a stable blue chip or index fund (a collection of blue chip stocks) in the market is anywhere from 8-12%. This essentially means, that prior to the adoption of the internet, an individual looking to invest $1000 would need to sacrifice a good years worth of returns (10%) in fees, and thats not even factoring in the opportunity cost associated with letting that money sit in a 4% savings account in the early 2000s instead. Very few, if anyone would have purchased less than $2000 or even less than $5000 at any one time with fees of around $100.
Fast forward to today, and what do we have? To purchase stocks now, an individual will most likely seek advice on the internet, and use an online service provided by his or her bank that allows the user to trade on the stock exchange within the country. Use of this service comes with a brokerage fee, however, due to the automation from the program, trades are faster and less human recources are expended, so fees are lower. In Australia a typical brokerage fee to purchase a packet of shares online would be $20. In todays world, interest rates have fallen and the stock markets, especially within the first world countries, have become a lot more efficient (approaching a theory known as the efficient market hypothesis), and thus returns are lower. So that $20 that doesn't sound like a lot, can bite into your returns if you are purchasing only a small amount, which we will explore now. Lets say you have $500 that you are looking to invest in a low risk large collection of shares such as an index fund. That $20 now equates to 4% of your total purchase. In the current market, a good year could return roughly 8%. Now you've sacrificed half a years profits (4%) on just the purchasing of the stock. I believe with the methods of purchasing stocks we have today, to spend less than $2000 on any one transaction is inadvisable (this means that you are paying a 1% fee of your initial investment).
So we've gone from $5000 to $2000 for a reasonable purchase, for some people these amounts are affortable, but many more people looking to invest just dont have that kind of money ready to park and leave in the market long into the future.

Now we are getting to the next step in this process; the blockchain model. By allowing companies to offer up equity in the form of nonfungable coloured coins ontop of a decentralised global public blockchain, you have opened this market up to everyone with an internet connection and any amount of spare cash. I see no reason why fees would need to exceed anything past a couple of cents, if they were too high, another person would be able to implement a competing system with lower fees due to the open source nature of the Bitcoin protocol. Transactions would be as fast as any other on the network, and individuals would be able to buy or sell equity across country lines without banks and government regulations. By building an equities exchange on top of Bitcoin, every person with an internet connection would have access to buy or sell equity in a company from anyone anywhere on the planet, essentially instantly and basically for free. This is an anarchists dream, it could usher in a new era in globalised trade, that in so far as Bitcoin is unhackable, would be completely secure.

Lets talk about regulation and IPO requirements

In Australia the current requirments for a business to go public on the stock market through an initial public offering (IPO) are as follows; A minimum of 300 non-affiliated investors at A$2000, they must offer up a free float of 20% in equity, they must pass a profit test whereby they are required to have consolidated A$1 million in profit from continued operations over the past 3 years, as well as A$500,000 profit from continuing operations over the last 12 months, or they are required to have either A$4million in net tangible assets, or A$15million market capitalisation. These figures can be found at http://www.asx.com.au.

The specific details don't matter, what matters is; companies need to be large and selling equity is not currently a possibility for the vast majority of small and even medium sized businesses. And on top of that, the current model also requires a set of ongoing and public financial reporting that all past, present and future share holders must have access to. The blockchain model would not only allow more people to buy stock in companies across the planet, but it would allow smaller businesses the opportunity to raise capital by selling equity; a system of financing that has potential to bring massive growth to those its available to. However, this is where things can get dicey.

Some would argue these stock exchange markets need governing bodies to oversee that things are done properly and that businesses can't scam or mislead people into purchasing stock that they otherwise would not have, had they been privvy to all the information. My personal opinion on this is that I don't know for sure whether a decentralised exchange would be able to succeed in a world that lacks centralised regulation, however I tend to believe less regulation is more often better than more, and if there became a demand for regulation/oversite, then perhaps a private business that monitors and confirms the legitimacy of companies that are trying to sell equity on the blockchain would be set up. This company would sell this service, and their reputation, business model and profits would be effected if they were found to be dodgy, thus they would have incentive to maintain legitimate practices.

Thats all I have to say on the topic of decentralised stock markets. The prospect excites me a great deal, and I look forward to hearing what you guys think.

Cooper

Questions Answers
What makes this any better than any other credit union? It's not better, it's different. We very much celebrate credit unions and if you can join one, you should. But we are a coop that anyone can join whereas most credit unions are only for a limited, defined membership. That was an important thing for us, to be available to anyone and everyone. another difference is that we cannot - yet - take deposits or make loans, like a CU can. Although the card we shall be offering in some ways does many of the things a regular checking account can do.
Will it be integrated with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin? Yr question: 2. No, not for now. See my earlier ansa on alt currencies. We like em, but for now we want to go more mainstream.
There are reports this card is in partnership with Visa, how is Visa in anyway Occupy? Don't Visa send all transactions to the feds? Yr question 3. Visa is not Occupy. But if you want a national payments network, there's no choice. Maybe one day we can replace it!
How is working with the Federal Reserve and major banks at all Occupy? Surely partnering with the existing financial system is exactly what Occupy is against? Yr question 4. We don't speak for all "Occupy" and I'm sure there are plenty of Occupiers who agree with you. But right now to offer a good value financial product to anybody in america, as we are doing, there is no choice. Maybe one day, but not yet. And we are not going to make the best the enemy of the good.
How do you counter the argument that this is just reinforcing neo-liberal capitalism and providing a false alternative? Yr question 5. I don't agree. Small steps will change the system. I don't see anyone making any big steps right now. Different theory of change.
How are decisions made within the "leadership" of the co-op? Are there weekly or monthly meetings? Are they in-person or virtual? To what degree will the decision-making process of the co-op be transparent? At the moment, the group takes decisions together. We meet every week. Once we have a larger membership, the coop bylaws will kick in. There will be regular member meetings, discussions and elections. We are determined to make it a transparent democracy.
I'm still confused about how we can actually GET the card. Can you explain the sign up process and how we physically get the card? We need to raise funds before we can launch the card. Once we launch the card, there will be a v simple process to sign up. Keep in touch!
Thanks for answering questions. Yr question 1: we regard ourselves as Occupy, we met in Zuccotti Park, we are committed to its principles; we don't own the idea of Occupy; and nor do you. This group had an open membership and was frequently discussed at GA and Spokescouncil. We never heard anyone say we couldn't carry on under the Occupy banner.
1) It sounds like right off the bat there's an acknowledgement that there is a non-radical approach to change behind the idea of the card (as a radical approach wouldn't derive strategic choices from a sense of what "the mainstream" is ready for, but would instead go directly at the root of the problems being addressed). Given that this is the case, why did you all feel the need to name the card after Occupy rather than paying tribute to its origins in some more indirect way? Yr question 2: democratically and transparently.
2) How will elections be handled? Yr question 3: you bet, always open to ideas. Join us and contribute.
3) How does this card and its structure relate to the Occupy principle of direct democracy? Would you be willing to explore the use of web-based facilitation tools like Loomio and Bettermeans to operate the co-operative in a non-traditional, non-representative fashion? Yr question 4: major risk is that it won't get off the ground; it's a good product and is better than most if not all of the prepaids out there. That's the point: offer something better to ppl who are exploited. Not complicated. Offering an alternative banking system is a bigger undertaking. We're committed to that too, but that will take longer. Your ideas welcome.
4) What potential risks do you forsee inherent to this effort? What kinds of strategies are you using to make sure this card doesn't simply loop more folks into the existing banking system without challenging it at all? In what ways are you planning on challenging it and how will these ideas be fleshed out and implemented? Yr question 5: sorry I don't understand the question. I'm not going to guess at yr meaning.
5) How does the existing membership of the Occupy Money Cooperative see itself relating to international financial institutions? Are there plans to tackle the global dynamics of neoliberal fiat banking and make your services available to folks in other countries? Is there interest within the OMC in challenging the access problems and inherent lack of democracy within the international economic-political sphere? Sorry re-reading yr question 5. Yes, our aim is to reform the whole system, eventually. We have discussed all of these questions and are alive to all of them. Naturally, they are big challenges. Creative ideas on setting up new structures to replace them are always welcome.
How is this distinguishable from a garden variety "no fee" prepaid debit card? Are there services offered that conventional prepaid cards do not offer (e.g. can a user without a bank account deposit their paycheck somehow e.g. take a pic of the check with a smartphone as some banks offer ... without first going through a check cashing store & paying exorbitant fees)? We hope our card will be the cheapest on the market, or among the cheapest, when you look at all the charges associated with a card. We are very low cost, and will pass on all savings we make to customers. Also, the more ppl who join the coop, the lower our fees will be. But BIG difference is that if you use the card, you join the coop! You become an owner of the service provider!
If you do offer the ability to deposit checks, then are you working this through a financial institution (in addition to Visa), like a conventional bank (since in the typical case, you can only use cash to load a prepaid card & taking checks as deposits would seem to require a bank to run it through the fed system)? Full details about the card's features will be announced when we launch it, but we are hoping that the card will offer lots of innovative features, and will best the market in terms of what you can do with it.
Why is your goal stated as getting more people to engage in our destructive rigged and self defeating monetary system? How does that further the goals of liberating people from the tyranny of the banks and the inflationary abusive fiat currency that they control? It's simple. our services will be better, cheaper, more transparent than those currently available. Secondly, by using them, you get to own the company. These are virtues worth celebrating, not attacking. If we are successful, we take business from the banks, and moneylenders, and exploitative card providers. Tell me, please, what exactly is wrong with that?
Carne, I see you were asked about your use of the word "Occupy" in your name. There doesn't appear to be an answer to that. You say you are dedicated to Occupy principles. How can setting up a for profit (and cooperatives are for profit) group and exploiting the name Occupy possibly be dedicated to Occupy principles? Further, in Occupy, if there was a groundswell of opposition to aspects of something, there were ways to meet and discuss and to come to a conclusion that met with people's satisfaction. What are the ways that could get Occupy Money to change aspects of itself such as using the word "Occupy" in your name? We're a non-profit cooperative. Any surplus will accrue for benefit of the members who are its customers. It's not a "for profit" in the typically understood sense at all. and btw, every single one of us has worked for nearly 2 years on our own time to get this thing off the ground, and several of us have put a lot of our own money in. We have no expectation of getting it back, nor any desire.
What is it going to take to "get this off the ground?" Money? Time? Licenses? We need the first few months operating expenses. We've done the rest. took us a long time...
You say "Visa is not Occupy." Why are you using the word Occupy in the name of your coop, and putting on a Visa card? Would you be willing to remove occupy from the card, and change the name of your coop? To your second question, no. We started in Zuccotti Park. We are committed to its principles. We are proud of the services and organization we are establishing. They are better and will make a difference.
Cryptocurrency bypasses taxation and monitoring, it is a real functional alternative which is already in use. There are several reddits where you can already pay for things simply by typing in a bitcoin tip[NSFW]. That is a real alternative, and a large step. Do you really think Visa and the fed will ever let you integrate cryptocurrency concepts which undermine their entire control scheme? How do you see cryptocurrencies integrating with your scheme in the long term? If you don't think a Visa is Occupy, why name your Visa card "Occupy" and hide the Visa connection? There is a choice, payment networks are already being replaced. How will creating yet another debt device, aimed at poor people, built on the petrodollar, and controlled by wallstreet, help the broader transition? These are complicated questions. Personally, I am not a fan of Bitcoin, but I am of alternative currencies. Obviously, to use an alternative currency you would not use Visa. The main vehicle for our effort to reOccupy banking is the coop, not the card. The card is just the first start.
Is Occupy Money open book accounting which allows any memeber to see how/where its funds are being used? Yes, we are aiming to have completely open accounting, while protecting the personal information of customemembers.
What are youomc's objections to Bitcoin? Which alternative currencies do you support? Well that's a long discussion. I object to a currency that requires thousands of hours on PCs (which many don't have) to create: it's an elite project. It's not transparent. It's a currency and a speculative asset, which is intrinsically unhealthy for stability. Bitcoin has many flaws. I hope we can learn from them. We'll get there, but bitcoin is not it. I find more interesting (cos they're democratic and transparent) local alt currencies eg the Brixton pound (and it's in my home town!)
How about having a public meeting where Occupy people who care about Occupy Money can discuss it with the people who are doing it. It does not seem from the comments on this that Occupy Money has a lot of support? Answering questions on Reddit is not exactly a real conversation. You are welcome to attend our group meetings. What about Reddit is not a real conversation? I'm answering every question, even the hostile ones (much as it annoys me).
Would you be willing to give the profits to Strike Debt? We have great relations with the Strike Debt team. But any profits from the coop are shared with the members ie the users of the coop's services. They decide how to use them, not me.
Is it possible that eventually you will become affiliated with a Credit Union instead of a Bank? Could Occupy money eventually organize as a nationwide Credit Union and still have the FDIC insurance? Very good point. It's definitely a long term possibility. We would love it if Credit Unions were to offer the Occupy Card themselves, and will explore that.
Will this card be accepted at the majority of stores? And how many branches will I be able to deposit and withdrawal money from? Yes, it should be. Full details of the card's features will be announced when we launch it.
If you do offer the ability to deposit checks, then are you working this through a financial institution (in addition to Visa), like a conventional bank (since in the typical case, you can only use cash to load a prepaid card & taking checks as deposits would seem to require a bank to run it through the fed system)? I replied to this earlier if you scroll up.
I understand that this group has meet once a week for the last two years. I've also heard them several times present at the GA. That's right. We updated Zuccotti Park, GAs and Spokescouncil regularly. Many Occupiers have joined the group and discussed their ideas. It's been a very diverse group.
No - though I may be mistaken, I recall Carne at one point saying that he inspired #OWS and the models it used to function. Can't be arsed to look too hard. I never said that and never would have said it. Check your facts or get offline.
I hope you're not confusing cynicism with legitimate concerns and significant and healthy skepticism. I'm not, don't worry. I hope I'm giving substantive responses to the substantive questions. Tell me if I'm missing any.
I don't see AMA anywhere... so, can I ask you anything? Yup.
You really have nothing to say about your board members except that you don't care about their past? I fully trust and like the OMC board members. They have committed their time and energy to building something new and better. I'm proud to be one of them.
